A heartbreaking incident unfolded in front of the very eyes of two passers-by as they watched in horror of an old woman drowning inside her sinking car.

On Wednesday (24 February 2021) around 10.30am near the Satok Suspension Bridge, a 70-year-old woman was seen driving her car off a ramp near the bridge, causing it to fall into the river. The car then quickly sink 15m deep into the water.

Two nearby men were busy collecting garbage on a tiny boat that morning when the incident occurred. One of the men named Bonnie said that when his friend and him saw the sinking vehicle, they quickly rushed to the scene in an attempt to save the driver (Source: The Star).

It was a heart-stopping moment as the two men raced against time to save the old woman but unfortunately all four doors were locked and the two men did not have any tools with them to break the windows.

According to Bonnie, the old woman saw that they had failed to save her and accepted her fate by signaling the two men to stop trying. Despite that, the two men didn’t stop. They even tried to pull the car out of the water using a rope.

However the rope eventually broke and the car continued to sink into the river. Soon after, 14 firemen were deployed to the scene from the Fire and Rescue Department and it took them three hours to retrieve the woman’s body.

It was later revealed that the deceased’s family members lost contact with her after she went out on Wednesday morning and when her family members saw her again, she already passed on.

The police are now currently investigating the case according to Kuching police chief ACP Awang Din Awang Gani.

Such a horrible incident to have happened to the old woman. We can’t imagine what she must have felt when she accepted her fate. May she rest in peace. As for the two men, hopefully they are not too traumatized by the incident and do not blame themselves for what happened. Instead they should be proud for their commendable efforts in trying to save the woman.
