C-virus Updates on 25 Sept - 5 Vaccine Candidates Are Now in Phase 3 Trials

Malaysia has 111 cases today. 107 are local transmissions whereas 4 are imported. In the last 24 hours, there are 30 recoveries and 0 deaths recorded. Most local cases today are from Sabah with 97 cases.




As Covid-19 has caused more than 200,000 deaths in America, the race to roll out a vaccine is underway to stop the spread of the virus. As of now, there are 5 candidates who are in the final stage of trials.



The five companies are:

  • Novavax (NVAX)
  • Johnson & Johnson (JNJ)
  • AstraZenca (AZN)
  • Moderna (MRNA)
  • Pfizer (PFE)

Novavax (NVAX) stated that up to 10,000 people between ages of 18 to 84 will be enrolled and immunize over the course of four to six weeks as trials are conduct in the U.K. Phase 3 trials in the U.S will start around October with 30,000 people involved if regulators pass their current Phase 2 trial which is currently afoot.

Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) started a 60,000 participant trial on the 23rd of September of their single-dose Covid-19 vaccine across the U.S, Brazil, South Africa and more countries and results are expected by early 2021.

AstraZenca (AZN) Phase 3 trials are on hold in the U.S due to individuals from the U.K developing a severe medical condition and expects to collect enough data by end of 2020 or early 2021 for the submission of approval for their vaccine.

Phase 3 trials started in July for Moderna (MRNA), CEO Stéphane Bancel stated their vaccine would be safe and effective by October or likely in November with a worse-case scenario of it being safe by December. The company expects to gain up to 30,000 individuals being enlisted by the end of the month.

Lastly, Pfizer (PFE) had partnered up with German drug maker, BioNTech, for their vaccine production. Phase 3 trials in the U.S in July and expects data of the vaccine’s effectiveness by the end of October.
