Bribery. It&rsquo;s something that unfortunately common when it comes to people getting pulled over by some law enforcement.&nbsp;

For us Malaysians, most know it as &ldquo;duit kopi&rdquo; as officers sometime do it due to them being very underpaid for their job or just wanting to find an excuse to make a quick buck. Don&rsquo;t get me wrong, not all officers are like this as there are many kind and good officers out there.
Recently, Johor Chief Minister Onn Hafiz Ghazi had responded to a post on Facebook which gone viral of a Singaporean family who were told to give some &ldquo;duit kopi&rdquo; to the Johor customs officials.

Onn Hafiz left a comment tagging local Chinese evening paper Shin Min Daily News (SMDN) which reported detailed on the incident.

Onn Hafiz says that he is taking the allegation seriously and he hopes that the Chinese newspaper can assist with the investigation.
Apparently, no one was manning the customs booth at the time

SMDN reported that the family of six were making their way to Johor Bahru at 6:30pm on 7 May and encountered an issue at the Woodlands Checkpoint.
The woman and her husband surname Song aged 42 said that upon arrival at the checkpoint, an individual had removed the traffic cone and indicated them to drive through the specific lane. Upon arrival, no one was present.
Due to not travelling to Malaysia for 2 years due to the pandemic, they initially thought that the custom procedures have changed. Therefore, they continued on after paying their toll fair along the causeway check point.
They were later stopped and given two choices:

When they encountered another officer at the checkpoint where vehicle checks were conducted, the couple enquired on why their passports were not checked by officers and stamped.
The said officer immediately told them to not continue through the checkpoint and guided them to the nearby office to settle the procedures they have missed.
In the office with all 6 of the family members passports, Song had been asked a series of questions and was informed that it was a &ldquo;very serious offence&rdquo;. After a while, the officer came out from the office and asked the couple if they would like to &ldquo;settle this privately or get detained and pay a fine&rdquo; which was allegedly RM10,000 (S$3,160).

As the family wanted to settle the issue privately, they had paid RM100 (S$32) for each family member to release as the bribe.
Negotiation on the bribe amount

Song&rsquo;s husband had mentioned that he negotiated with the officers to lower the price, but the officers dismissed it for being &ldquo;too little&rdquo; and that their superior &ldquo;would not agree to it&rdquo;. He also tried to inform the officers that there were no officers at the customs booth at the time they passed.
The officer responded asking the couple if they were sure if there wasn&rsquo;t anyone there and the couple had stopped the conversation. After the final amount was decided, the couple were instructed to put the cash in their passports and the officers had taken it.
The officer at the time who was one of the bigger sized ones had used his phone to cover up the cash which he had inserted into his pocket. He was indeed in uniform but was spotted wearing flip-flops instead.
As the couple didn&rsquo;t want to risk anything as the officer sounded threatening and they feared that they were crossing the border illegally.

If there is no one manning the booth at the immigration counter, drivers should step out and seek for an officer&rsquo;s assistance rather than driving ahead.
Things like this should not be done in the first place and I do hope authorities will find those involved and hope that justice will be served.

La Risata Bar Pizzeria Ristorante is an Italian restaurant located in Ampang and if you&rsquo;re looking for a night out with good company, the restaurant certainly hits the spot!

The Pastabilities Are Endless At La Risata, Ampang!

Collecting sneakers is one of the more expensive hobbies out there as many would like to chase the hype of owning the freshest kicks.
But one question that sets the bar is, how much would you really pay for a pair of sneakers?

Recently, luxury fashion brand Balenciaga had unveiled their &ldquo;Paris Sneaker&rdquo; collection which features some limited edition of their high-top sneakers. The price is set at S$2,590 (~RM8261.33) each which sounds reasonable considering it&rsquo;s Balenciaga.
But the shoes feature a design that&rsquo;s &ldquo;fully destroyed&rdquo; and some with a distressed canvas and rough edges around it making it look pre-worn.

Now these ones up here are the rough edges and pre-worn looking sneakers.

The &ldquo;extra destroyed&rdquo; shoes are one real ones in question. They quite literally look like they were pulled out of the trash and was abandoned somewhere for years as it features extremely worn and scuffed materials, worn marks and dirtied.
Now why would someone do this&hellip; or is this a sign of Balenciaga calling out the French for being very dirty?
Currently, Balenciaga says that the extra destroyed sneakers will have only 100 pairs and is available on their website in either black or white.
&ldquo;Worn for a lifetime&rdquo;
The French designer company explains that the limited-edition shoes and more specifically the &ldquo;extra destroyed&rdquo; ones suggest that the sneakers were meant to be worn for a lifetime.
Unfortunately, despite their efforts, it seems like they received more backlash than support from consumers worldwide. Yeah, no one wants to pay that much for a shoe that&rsquo;s looks like that. In fact, you could probably look better in a worn-out pair of converse instead.

Heavy criticism from the Chinese consumer market
It&rsquo;s no stranger that the brand had sparked anger among Chinese consumers. Recently they had over 2 million consumers voicing their criticism over Weibo and saying the shoe is too ugly and said it shows how the wealthy can be insensitive and tone-deaf.

Back in 2018, the brand was boycotted by many after a staff had roughly manhandled a Chinese tourist at a Balenciaga outlet in Printemps department store in Paris. In 2020, they received more backlash after having launched a series of bags for Chinese Valentine&rsquo;s Day where many say it was gaudy and insulting.
Well, I&rsquo;m no shoe collector (at least for those expensive hyped-up shoes) but I do love getting new pairs to use and rotate them occasionally. Even if I had the money, I wouldn&rsquo;t bother getting these shoes cause it seriously just doesn&rsquo;t justify the price.

I&rsquo;m sure many of us who remember those good ol&rsquo; school days, there&rsquo;s always one trouble maker in class which can potentially get the whole class in trouble.
Punishments in class are normally pretty light from standing outside the class or perhaps submitting extra work to the teacher. Unfortunately, that&rsquo;s not the case for this incident which had landed one teenager in the hospital after the punishment almost took a near-fatal turn.
The incident happened at Foon Yew High School in Kulai, Johor where a teacher had punished the whole class after one student failed to complete their homework. Due to that, the students were allegedly made to run 30 rounds around the school&rsquo;s volleyball court with their mask on.

As the class served the punishment, the girl had felt ill after running 15 rounds and was allowed to walk the remaining rounds. Unfortunately, when she got home, her condition had worsened as her heart rate accelerated to 200bpm which caused her to go into shock. She had been rushed to the hospital and was subsequently admitted into the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
School initially brushed off the incident

In a Facebook post which had already been deleted, the girl&rsquo;s mother stated that she school had brushed off the incident after several days as she wanted to discuss about it.
"They told me the issue had been settled and that the school did not enforce mask-wearing during physical activity&rdquo; she said. She was also rejected upon a request to meet the school&rsquo;s principal.
The thing that didn&rsquo;t make sense was that the teenager had told her mother that the teacher had insisted the class to wear their masks even when exercising (which under the current law, is not required when doing so). The students were only allowed to take their mask off when feeling unwell.
Principal issues apology over the incident

As the mother was dissatisfied about the behaviour, she had shared the incident online but once it gained the attention of many, the principal had contacted her to issue an apology.
Subsequently they invited the parents for a meeting on 18 May where a formal apology from the teacher involved and the principal as they admitted that they handled the mater inappropriately. The mother had also indicated that after the whole ordeal, she won&rsquo;t be pursuing the matter.
Thankfully the school took proper responsibility right after but a friendly reminder to all is no not push yourself or someone during intense physical activities as we won&rsquo;t know what consequence it may bring. 
Another reminder is that when playing sports, its also better to not wear your mask as it restricts oxygen flow to your body.

Well, it looks like Malaysians will have something to look forward to as SpaceX had recently noted that their Starlink satellite Internet service in will be available in 32 different countries throughout the world in 2023. One of them being Malaysia!
Initially the internet service belonging to Elon Musk is supposed to be available here in 2022. In a post by Lowyat, they had enquired with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) if SpaceX had obtained the necessary regulatory operation approvals in Malaysia but had never got a response.

He is currently in the United States as he is on a trade talk tour where he&rsquo;s met representatives from Amazon and even Microsoft. As he goes to meet SpaceX, he was greeted by Andrew Matlock who is the Director of Commercial Sales alongside Jonathan Hofeller and Samuel Gibbs IV who are the Vice Presidents at Starlink.
Now accepting orders from Malaysia

Even before it&rsquo;s officially launched, those interested can already reserve their Starlink by placing a deposit of USD99 (~RM435) and it will be fulfilled on a first-come, first-served basis. The system will work as long as the area is within its satellite coverage and will require a Network Facility or Service Provider license (NFP/NSP) from the MCMC.
So, how much is it?

If you&rsquo;re looking forward to Starlink, it&rsquo;s going to cost you quite a bit as the price had recently increased. The hardware alone cost USD599 (~RM2,638) and the monthly subscription fee cost USD110 (~RM485).
For the price, its expected that you&rsquo;ll get between 100 to 200 Mbps with latency as low as 20ms in most locations. This is possible thanks to their low orbit earth (LEO) satellites which revolves around at a much lower altitude compared to geostationary satellites.
All honesty, this is much better than the current ConnectMe satellite service by MEASAT. It does provide 100% coverage around Malaysia but has download speeds up to 30Mbps and a high ping of 500ms.
Is Starlink worth it?

In my own personal opinion, only if you&rsquo;re in a more rural area where internet access can be limited, then yes, it would be worth the price, but you would probably want to share the cost among a few people, so it doesn&rsquo;t put a hole in your wallet.
But if you&rsquo;re still in the city like most of us, it would still make more sense to subscribe to the normal fibre packages from Maxis, Time or even Unifi as it is more cost effective and can provide higher speeds.

It&rsquo;s been just shy of 2 months since the China Eastern Airlines crash.
The crash took the lives of 132 passengers + crew on board.

After all this time, it&rsquo;s taken some time for investigators to find out what truly happened to the flight as the airlines had a clean safety history till this happened. So far, the investigators had ruled out any mechanical or technical faults with the jet.
The flight had departed form Kunming and was on its way to Guangzhou.

The black box of the plane was recovered and sent to the US, and investigators took a look at the data, and it showed that someone on-board the plane had input controls to send the plane into a nose dive. It was cruising at 29,000 feet before suddenly going into the vertical dive and slamming into the remote hillside as seen on CCTV footage that captured the final moments of the flight.

A report by CNN stated that the plane had three qualified pilots on board + flight crew and maintenance personnel were all said to be in good health and had no financial issues as indicated by the airline company.

But since data shows that the crash was deliberately done from inside the plane, this would mark the third major disaster for aviation history in the last decade as it&rsquo;s related to pilot suicide.
What about the voice recordings on the flight?

As chilling as it can be, the purpose of a black box on a plane is to help record anything that happens on a plane and in the. There&rsquo;s 2 of them on board, 1 for the instruments and computer readings and the other is for voice communication in the cockpit.
Investigators are still analysing the data and due to the black boxes being badly damaged, it will ne a while before we find the true reason behind the crash. It&rsquo;s also noted that if the pilots were attempting a crash landing of sort, the landing gears of the plane would have been deployed or the flaps of the plane wouldn&rsquo;t have been pointing straight.

China Eastern Airlines Crash May Have Been Intentional

Looks like Malaysia really can&rsquo;t catch a break huh?
From political issues, economy issues with the rise of goods going up and now data privacy issues as well. Recently there was a report that the data of at least 22.5 million Malaysian&rsquo;s were put up for sale.

The data allegedly contains the entire adult population in Malaysia born between 1940 to 2004 which full details such as their full name, IC number, address, mobile number, gender, race, religion and the photo of your IC.
It was listed for sale for US$10,000 (~RM43,870) and also accepted in Bitcoin or Monero cryptocurrency.
Dato Seri Hamzah Zainudin, who is the Home Affairs Minister, had denied that the data came from the National Registration Department (JPN) and he says that authorities with the assistance of the Home Affairs ministry will be investigating the individuals behind the sale of personal data.

As of now, there are no further details on separate sales of the data and eKYC photo which allegedly came from the Election Commission&rsquo;s voter registration site.

The said individual claims that the data was obtained from JPN&rsquo;s MyIdentity API which has 160GB worth of data which covers all Malaysian adults. It was posted on an online forum which acts like a marketplace with many others offering similar data leaks. As for this individual, the person claims to be the same party behind last years data sale of almost 4 million Malaysians.
If you thought this was fake, the seller even provided the data of the Home Minister himself as proof of authenticity.

No personal data leak from JPN during the last round

Following the issue that happened last year, Hamzah confirmed that the data leak specifically is not from JPN. He also confirmed that the firewall for the data security control system is very secure. JPN has also ensured Malaysians on the security and integrity of the data.
The Star reported that at least 104 agencies are permitted to use the MyIdentity data and serves as a data-sharing platform between various government agencies. Despite the police report being lodged and investigations being carried out, there has been no clear answer on how the data was leaked.

Although the source is not directly from JPN, there is still a concern as in recent times, Malaysians have been receiving many scam calls and phishing attacks from people impersonating officials from banks, police and even courthouses.

Is Your Data Safe? JPN Claims Not At Fault For Info Leak Of 22.5 Million Malaysians

If you think that racism cases and issues in Malaysia are awful, wait till you see this. Prayer goes out to all the 10 African Americans that got murder in this shooting. Yes you read correctly, 10 lives were taken in only 1 shooting. Not to raise any racism issues here but the shooter is a Caucasian teen. It happened at a grocery store at Buffalo City in New York, and the shooter went to the grocery store way ahead of time just to observe and plan out his whole scheme.&nbsp;

The messed up part about this shooting is, the shooter, name Payton Gendron is only 18 years&rsquo; old. Moreover, he actually wrote out his whole intention and plan to commit the murder. Like, who does that? Admit to committing a crime before it even happens? He even posted it on his discord, and it went viral, that is really messed up.

The planning and site surveying all happened on March 8, and on a social media post on March 10, Gendron wrote "I'm going to have to kill that security guard at Tops. I hope he doesn't kill me or even hurt me instantly," as reported by CNN. As a matter of fact, that was not the only hint that he posted on his social media. According to all the messages and posts written and posted by Payton Gendron himself, we can say that his hatred towards black people or should I say African Americans is indeed strong.

He was was solely motivated by white supremacy, he drew specific inspiration from a white supremacist gunman who killed 51 people in two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, in 2019. Gendron originally planned to attack in late 2021 and early 2022, but his plan was disturbed and delayed due to several reasons that were not mentioned on the news. Shockingly enough, the shooter was not plead guilty after 10 murders, wow, that is why the Americans are angry and statin that &ldquo;this is obviously a hate crime towards black people&rdquo;.

Lets bring it all back, the murderer of this case is only 18 years&rsquo; old, in Asia, we might think that the parents did not raise the kid well, or the kid is being affected and brain washed by his friend around him. Seems to me that Gendron was not motivated or affected by any of the factors that I&rsquo;ve mentioned, but he&rsquo;s actually motivated by the news he saw on social media or other media like radio or television.

Being a normal human being like me, all I can do is influence people around me, hoping that they do not tunr towards racism and cause crimes and complications like this. But as a news and media reporter, they have the power to reach out to millions of audiences all at once, it is very important that they take the responsibility to spread awareness and not lead the audiences towards the wrong path. The message being shown in the media can sometimes be misleading, all you need is one wrong message and it will lead someone towards the wrong path.

The government has reassured that the wheat export ban by India following its heatwave is not expected to affect Malaysia's wheat flour supply.&nbsp;
According to Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry (KPDNHEP), 80 percent of wheat are imported from Australia, with the remaining from United States, Canada, and Ukraine. Therefore, India's wheat export ban will not affect our local wheat flour supply.&nbsp;
On May 17 2022, KPDNHEP tweeted that a total of 2,200 KPDNHEP enforcement personnel would be monitoring to ensure the supply of subsidised and non-subsidised flour is stable in the market.&nbsp;

On May 13 2022, External Trade director-general under the Trade Ministry announced that India has halted an immediate wheat export to improve its food security. The global wheat price rose drastically following the ban. Wheat export to other countries would only be allowed based on approval and demand of the government.&nbsp;
In the 2021-22 finance year, India exported seven million tonnes of wheat worth about US$2 billion (RM8.8 billion) where Bangladesh bought half of it. Recent media reports mentioned that the country is facing high inflation due to increased global prices, apart from the wheat production because of heatwave.&nbsp;
Either way, we should be prepared for food inflation. Seeing how the country also suffered from recent global shortages (potato and chicken), it is the best thing to do.
